Obstacle work is one of the skills taught to a guide dog in order for it to navigate around obstacles in a manner that ensures the handler does not come into contact with the obstacles. The trainer trains the guide dog to use its initiative when navigating obstacles. The dog has a choice it needs to make in order to keep handler safe; to stop before an obstacle and go around it, or to navigate handler away from it.
