Bugonia feels like Yorgos Lanthimos paying tribute to 1960s alien and monster movies. What’s missing, though, are the playful artistic flirtations with absurdity that define his voice. The film is enjoyable enough, but it’s surprisingly straightforward—and that’s not really why I watch Lanthimos. I come to his films to have my imagination or emotions stretched. This one doesn’t quite do that. Hopefully, the next film is a return to his wonderfully strange best. | Shakib Chowdhury
